"Embolism-inducing fun!"
Gameplay:
Wild 9 is a creative side-scrolling platformer with bizarre humor and unique gameplay. The "catch" of this game is that the player (named Wex) has a "rig" attached to his arm. The "rig" is an electic grapple beam, similar to Samus Aran's (of Metroid) and Ratchet's (of Ratchet & Clank). With this grapple beam, Wex lifts his foes and and mercilessly smashes them into the floor, walls, grinders, spikes, infernos, etc. All of this is executed in a fresh, humorous manner that does not get old. While I have not played Earthworm Jim in a VERY long time (and even when I did, it wasn't that much), I have heard that Wild 9 is very reminiscent of those games.
Graphics:
The graphics of Wild 9 are certainly not eye-popping, stellar, FMV-quality graphics, however, they aren't terrible eye-sores either. They are done in a comical manner that suits the nature of Wild 9 well.
Sounds/Music:
The sounds/music of Wild 9 are well-done in the sense that they don't stick out, however, there aren't tunes that you'll be humming after you turn off your console either. All in all, the ambient music serves its purpose and the screams of those you torture do too. :)
Difficulty:
My largest gripe about Wild 9 is the difficulty of the game. You begin with 3 continues and earn another for every 99 "gears" you collect. Well, trying to collect all 99 "gears" in a level almost guarantees you a loss of a continue, making all your efforts pointless. Hence the title of the review, it can really frusturate you that much (or can really frustrate me, rather) that you need to take a break from the game for your own health.
Conclusion:
Wild 9 appears to be one of those games that you either LOVE it, or you HATE it. If an Earthworm Jim-esque sidescrolling platformer, complete with zany humor and a somewhat harsh Continue system sounds appealing to you, chances are you will lean towards the LOVE it group. If not, well.....you do the math.
